Curling Sheet Cake

I was at a birthday party a couple of weekends ago, a party with a curling theme.  Since I was in charge of the dessert for around 60 people, I decided to go with a curling theme at the dessert table as well.  A fairly easy dessert is the curling sheet cake.  You need 4 boxes of white or yellow cake mix (or make the cake from scratch), 4 containers of vanilla icing, 1 tube of black icing gel, 1 tube of brown icing gel, 1 tube of red icing, and 1 tube of blue icing.  Make the cake mixes two at a time in a double depth 9x13 pan, they'll be placed end to end to get the length of the curling sheet.  Once the cakes are cooled, level the crown off the cake.  This is easiest with an actual cake leveller (I borrowed one from my friend, it looks kind of like a hacksaw).  You could also use a knife if you have a steady hand.  The idea here is to get a flat surface for the cake to sit on (you'll ice the 'bottom' of the cake, the levelled off top will be too difficult to ice without tearing.

Once you've iced the whole cake in white, it's time to add the details.  I added houses on both ends, hog lines, tee lines, back lines and the hack.  The only thing I used the brown gel for was the hacks, so you could easily substitute for black gel).  If I was making this cake again, I'd make sure to put the centre line and tee lines on BEFORE drawing the houses.  Check out the picture below to see how the cake turned out!  Everyone at the party loved the cake, and you don't need artistic ability to create this one.  Next, I think I'll try to make a curling rock out of cupcakes....now I just need another party at a curling club.
